To make things more difficult and interesting, the blob of mercury will separate if you hit corners too sharply, fall of ledges or get eaten by enemies. While it might not suit everyone’s tastes, there’s no denying that the game is a classic. Also sometimes the AI crafts seem to beat you unfairly on the last lap if you’re coming first, by regularly hitting you with weapons.Īfter the lackluster Wipeout Fusion on Playstation 2, Wipeout Pure is definitely back in pure form and a title worth considering for the PSP system. If there’s anything to gripe about than I would say the tracks are too narrow when compared to the previous Wipeout games. Wipeout Pure has eight player multiplayer through Wi-Fi. This extra content makes the game well worth the $40 price tag. Four packs have already been released which keep the game fresh and requires anyone with all the gold medals to acquire them with the new packs. These packs are saved onto the memory stick and seamlessly integrate with the main game. One of the best features of Wipeout Pure is the ability to download extra tracks and crafts from the Internet. You won’t be waiting for ages trying to get a race in. Loading times for the tracks are also very good. There are plenty of tracks in Wipeout Pure with some remade classics from previous games for good measure. Sound effects are also up to scratch with great explosion sounds and various other noises complementing the whole package. The electronic music (techno etc) soundtrack fits the futuristic theme perfectly. Wipeout has always been known for its good and very appropriately themed music. Using these weapons strategically can be the difference between first and last place in the faster leagues. If the AG craft runs out of its shield, the race is over. Weapons can be used/fired or absorbed to replenish your crafts shield. These weapons are picked up in-game when flying past a weapon pad on the race track. Plenty of weapons are available such as missiles and rockets for offensive, mines and shields for defensive plus many more. Weapons have always been part of the Wipeout series, they add that extra bit of excitement and frustration into the racing experience. Speaking of leagues, Wipeout Pure has five, which increase the speed of the crafts drastically and also in difficulty. Mastering the air brake is essential if you want to make it to the faster leagues. The D-pad or analog stick can be used for steering. Circle button is used to absorb weapons (more about this later) and square button is used to use/fire them. Cross button is used for acceleration and the shoulder buttons are used as “air brakes” to slide and brake around corners. Wipeout Pure rewards persistence and skill and is not a game for people who aren’t willing to put in the effort. Newcomers will need to get used to the AG crafts handling and practice to reduce frustration. The graphics are also very bright so most of the time you can play on the lowest light setting on your PSP, which conserves battery power. This is one of the nicest looking games on the PSP system and shows what the PSP is capable of. They provide a high amount of detail and a fairly steady frame rate even when the racing starts to get chaotic with weapon shots flying everywhere. The graphics in Wipeout Pure are excellent to say the least, especially for a first generation title.
